URL Categorization

June 2nd, 2010

Are you the kind of person who has a good deal of DVDs and/or blue ray discs?  Have you ever sat down to organize your movie collection?  When I was a kid I would try to keep my music cassette tapes organized – the first Beastie Boys album was my prized possession.  I started to collect music CDs and VHS video tapes when I was in college.  For the last 10 years I have been collecting DVDs.

It is a real challenge to keep my collection organized.  I never know whether I want to organize them by genre or rating or the alphabet.  I was going to have a category for just Kate Hudson and Jordana Brewster movies  …because they love me.

Now imagine if you are trying to set up URL categorization.  It is one thing to classify your music collection and quite another to organize a URL collection!  However, that is exactly what URL categorization sites attempt to achieve – generally through a mixture of software and personal organization.

How about 30 million websites or so!  These all need to be categorized by URL and stored in a searchable database.  I wish I had that many DVDs.
